Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week (BBW) is celebrated on the last week of September each year.  It was created to bring public awareness of censorship issues.  As Americans, we all have the right to express our thoughts and opinions, and in turn to have access to others' published thoughts and opinions, no matter how unpopular they may be.

Unfortunately, many of us take this right to the freedom of expression for granted.  Every year, there are a variety of attempts made by individuals or groups to remove or restrict access to items held in libraries because of the opinions expressed or the language used within them.  Librarians fight against this sort of censorship in order to maintain everyone's freedom of expression.  With the public's understanding and support, we will be able to fight that much harder.
