Every year, the Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools. The lists are based on information from media stories and voluntary reports sent to OIF from communities across the U.S.

A common reason given for challenging a book is “unsuited/inappropriate for age group”, on this list of 130 frequently challenged children’s books.

Books written for YA audiences, those featuring a YA main character, and classics that regularly appear on high school required reading lists.

At least 46 of the Radcliffe Publishing Course Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century have been the targets of ban attempts.

OIF found that out of the 2015 Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged Books, nine of them contained diverse content. The 86 books on this list include content by or about people of color, LGBT people and/or people with disabilities.

Comics are challenged for all of the same content reasons that other books are challenged, but are uniquely vulnerable to challenges because of the medium’s visual nature. Comics are frequently banned for containing “adult content,” “inappropriate language,” “violence/horror,” “sex/nudity,” or not being “age appropriate.”
